Hotel Santo Apóstolo offers views to la ría de Vigo with the Cesantes beach just a few minutes on foot from the hotel. Rías are the estuaries of Galicia and they are an important part of the regional landscape; they form a beautiful backdrop to the sea and they carve their way eastwards into the mountainous terrain of inner Galicia. You can enjoy the beautiful views of the local ría de Vigo and the islands of San Simon. These islands have had an interesting past having been both the home of monastic orders and then later a place of violence, starting with the activities of Drake and culminating in the turbulence of the Spanish Civil War. Now it is a quiet spot and a place for rest for those on the Portuguese Camino. Vigo can be seen in the distance at the mouth of the ría and is the largest city in Galicia and an important cultural and economic centre for the local people.
There is a small village alongside the ría which is within walking distance of the hotel; a few kilometres up river is the small town of Arcade with it’s famous Roman bridge, there is also a railway link here to the cities of Pontevedra and Vigo; a few kilometres in the other direction takes the visitor to the town of Redondela, known as the town of the two viaducts, the railway looms over a green plaza in centre of this market town. Galicia is famous for it’s unspoiled coastline and within a short drive are fantastic Atlantic beaches and Cliffside coastal scenery, this is not the stereotyped image of Spain, this is the rugged green coast, the Celtic fringe of South Western Europe. Finally the hotel’s most well known association, that of the Camino; we are a popular stop for pilgrims on route to Galicia’s most famous city, Santiago de Compostela, it is about two days for those on foot and another day to the Finisterre, the end of the world where pilgrims traditionally ended their journey with a ritual burning of their pilgrimage clothes. If you prefer an easier option it is an hour’s drive to the famous city along the local motorway.
The Team
The hotel was taken over by a local family in 2013 but some of the original hotel team have carried on with us as we work to improve the guest experience. Tito is the head chef; supported by Ana in the kitchen, guests are looked after by Alfonso and Laura, whilst Rosa looks after the rooms; you will also see others helping out too, including the owners Pepe and Geny. We are an informal hotel and as with all small establishments we aim to welcome everyone whether it is just for a simple drink and a tapa or for those who wish to stay with us.
The Guests
Many local people join us for just tapas or dinner but most of our overnight guests are on the Camino. The area though does offer much more and we are happy to help plan itineraries for longer staying guests; we can offer help with many of the local outdoor activities, nature lovers will enjoy bird-watching and local hiking. Outdoor sports such as mountain biking and kayaking are also popular and we can help guests to plan these activities. There is also a lot of cultural interests in Galicia, whether this is the Baroque architecture of Santiago, the bustling dockside city of Vigo with it’s old stone built city, la Piedra, sitting in the midst of a busy modern port, or the nestling churches and farmhouses in the remote villages of the mountains. Visitors will also enjoy the tranquillity of the quiet beaches and rocky coastline that is unique to this region of Spain. Galicia can also form part of a grand tour of Northern Spain and Portugal and again we are happy to recommend potential itineraries and other hotels if you plan long distance touring by car or train.
If there are any questions or queries please e-mail us and we will be happy to help. We can offer detailed expert advice in English.
