1944 was a turning point for the world. The dark era was coming to an end, and the world needed something to make it smile again. Along comes Xocolating 1944 (pronounced “choco-la-ting nineteen forty four”), just recently established to bring joy and happiness to everyone. It all started in the heartlands of Catalonia (Spain), as Mama David was trying to keep her children well fed. As we all know, it is no easy task to get little children to eat healthy foods. And in those days, with food supplies very scarce, the towns people had a little secret, every morning they would go out in the woods and pick up fresh nuts from the surrounding trees. As you might know, up in the pristine mountain of the Pyrenees, Almond tress, hazelnut trees, Macadamia trees, and many other kinds of nutty trees are plenty. But the trick in keeping the woods sustainable was to only harvest what your needed and not take more than you were going to use. Of course these nuts are full of the lords nutritional gifts. With an abundant amount of essential fatty oils, vitamins and minerals, it remained a very well kept secret of why the towns people had such radiant and young looking skin, not to mention, all were healthy and could pass by the winter months without even a sniffle or a cough. But I digress.

As we were saying, back to Mama David and feeding her children, who didn’t want to eat the healthy nuts, or anything that was good for them for that matter. Mama David had a bright light bulb moment, and lord and behold, she came up with the ingenious idea of dipping the nuts in home made melted chocolate. But in order to be more convincing, she had to make sure they were coated completely just to trick the little children. So Mama David worked hard in perfecting her coating ways, and started each morning, after coming back from the woods with the heavenly nuts, she would painstakingly dips each nut and coat it with chocolate. And as the chocolate set, she would roll them in fresh hand ground coco powder. And hence the first Bonbon was born.
Then just before the children arrived from school, Mama David would set up the chocolate covered nuts on a plate on the table and just keep it there without uttering a word. The children would come from school, eager to tell how their days went to Mama David, and would smell the aroma just whiffing away from the table. As they gathered around the table, the urge to reach out and grab one of those balls was getting too strong for anyone to be able to resist. And sure enough, before Mama David could have a moment to look back, the plate was empty. Day after day the same story. Mama David was ecstatic that she managed to trick the children into eating what is good for them.
Xocolating-1And one day, while Mama David was preparing the bonbons for the children, Papa David comes in and steals one of the bonbons without giving it much thought. He would sit at the table and read his paper and almost automatically, reach out for a bonbon. Not even realising how much he actually enjoyed the taste, as it sensually melted in his mouth, and then he would reach the crunchy nut, bite into it a little harder and have the flavours instantly combine and create and even more delicate and orgasmic sensation in his mouth. But being the astute business man that he was, another light bulb struck, and the rest was history. Soon after, the world hailed the era of Xocolating 1944!
As we all know, what makes a good chocolate good, is not just the mumbo jumbo of texture and taste and look and feel and all the other sensual things that make chocolate what it is, but instead, the real test of a good chocolate is when once you start with the first bonbon, you want another, and another and another and don’t seem to get bored of the taste. And the guilt of you knowing that you should stop having them is getting stronger and stronger, but somehow it has cast a spell on you and you are dying to have just one more and can’t seem to resist. The harder you try, the strong the temptation. And that my friend, is what makes our chocolates special! So go ahead, try one, see if you can stop after just one bite. We dare you!
